I was just talking about him last week. A great driver and bike racer. Hopefully reunited with his son.

A sad day for motorsports. He was a true gentleman of the sport. Tom

Ah, John was my childhood hero. Racing information was sketchy in central Nebraska. My only source of F1 results were in the Sports Illustrated weekl lists. In a few months I would get the Road and Track magazine. I was as impatient as a kid waiting for the Ovalteen Decoder Ring, waiting for the next issue of R&T to come. I remember John being totally dominate at the (old) Nurbugring. The drove is P2? about as fast as the formula 1 were going. Had not been for recurrent bouts with Mr. Ferrari, John would have won more races. John's, Henri, was killed a few years ago by a flying tire (he was a spectator). And yes a great cyclist.

I too waited impatiently for R&T to arrive, and immediately go to Rob Walker's report on the most recent F1 (several months before!) Always rooting for my hero Jackie Stewart. No anticipation any more, everything is immediate in this culture. Do you think our experience burned the memories deeper into the brain cells due to having to wait? I can still see the cover shot of Gurney winning for America in his Eagle at Spa.
